Opportunity Description
As part of a comprehensive research capacity initiative, Partners In Health/Inshuti Mu Buzima (PIH/IMB) has led Six intermediate operational research trainings (IORTs). Over the 12-month course, trainees receive three weeks of face-to-face training and in-person and distance mentorship to develop, implement and write-up a research project culminating in a scientific manuscript.
IORT was initiated to address the critical gap in research capacity within our institutions. While there is growing recognition of the importance of research in informing policy, improving health outcomes, and driving evidence-based interventions, many practitioners and researchers lack the skills and resources to conduct high-quality operational research. This training builds research capacity, bridge knowledge gaps and foster collaboration across institutions. It is designed to strengthen the research culture within the organization and partnering institutions, build confidence in research skills, and ultimately contribute to the development of evidence-based policies and practices.
Over the six training cohorts, this course trained 97 individuals, including staff from PIH/IMB, the Rwanda Ministry of Health (RMOH), the University of Rwanda-College of Medicine and Health Sciences (UR-CMHS), The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) and Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) working on different research projects. In addition to sharing lessons of successes and challenges of health program implementation with peers and policy makers, these projects let to the publication of 35 papers, with several others currently under review.
This year’s IORT (2024-2025) will be hosted in collaboration with the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), marking the beginning of our partnership in IORT and paving the way for continued collaboration in the years to come.
The first session is planned to take place 25th – 29th, November, 2024 at UGHE Campus in Butaro.
