Opportunity Description

The East Africa Point of Care study: Validating the adapted stigma scale-SAFI for adolescents living with HIV in four East African countries

Introduction
The University of Rwanda is a Public Higher Learning Institution committed to support the development of the country through the generation and advancement of knowledge and innovation. As a partner of the East Africa Consortium for Clinical Research (EACCR), the University of Rwanda, through the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), is implementing an EDCTP funded project entitled “The Use of Point of Care HIV Viral Load Monitoring to Improve the Viral Load Suppression among Children and Young People Living with HIV in East Africa (EAPoC_VL)”.

Background
UNAIDS developed the 95-95-95 treatment strategy to end the HIV/AIDS pandemic by 2030. The first 95 aims to ensure that 95% of people living with HIV know their HIV status; the second 95 aims to ensure that 95% of people who know their status are receiving HIV treatment (ART); and the third 95 aims to make sure that 95% of people on treatment are virally supressed. To achieve the third ‘95’, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends six-month viral load (VL) monitoring to achieve viral load suppression. Point of Care HIV Viral Load (PoC_VL) monitoring is a novel approach that aims to eliminate some of the challenges associated with centralized VL monitoring, including delays or loss of VL data.

It is in this regard that EACCR partners are implementing the EAPoC VL study in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The project aims to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of using PoC_VL monitoring among children and adolescents living with HIV in East Africa. As part of this study, we intend to examine how psychosocial life indicators mediate the Point of Care effect on adherence and viral load suppression. We therefore want to ensure that the various mental health screening tools in the study are psychometrically validated for our target population.

The University of Rwanda is therefore inviting national, regional, or international Masters of Science (MSc) students in health sciences who are interested in conducting their MSc thesis on the psychometric validation of the adapted stigma scale-SAFI (Stigma in AIDS Family Inventory) for people aged 12-24 years living with HIV in East Africa.
