Opportunity Description

The University of Turku, Finland, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of membrane potential in cyanobacteria and its biotechnological implications. The project, led by Dr. Lauri Nikkanen, focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of how photosynthetic bacteria regulate the proton motive force across their thylakoid membranes. The research aims to unravel how cyanobacteria adapt to changing environments and apply this knowledge to optimize solar-powered sustainable biotechnologies.

The selected candidate will work on a fundamental research project, combining experimentation and simulation to understand membrane potential regulation in cyanobacteria. The project involves collaboration with international laboratories and contributing to high-impact research on photosynthesis. The role may include duties such as cyanobacterial culturing, gene editing, coding, bioinformatics, and scientific writing.

  • MSc in plant science, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Previous experience in biological, biochemical, or biophysical research.
  • Additional skills (cyanobacterial culturing, molecular biology, coding, bioinformatics, photosynthesis measurement techniques, electrophysiological techniques) are advantageous.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit the following documents in English:

  • Letter of motivation, including a brief introduction of expertise related to the requirements.
  • CV (max 2 pages).
  • Copy of MSc degree certificate.
  • Contact details of three referees.
  • Possible additional documents showcasing the candidate’s merits and suitability.
